Gifts with greater meaning
 Gifts with greater impact

Planned giving is a profoundly effective fundraising tool.
It’s also one of the most underutilized...

Giving USA recently reported that planned gifts account for 8 percent ($23.8 billion) of all giving. This number is especially impressive when you consider that raising planned gifts is often relegated to the back burner of the development office—the program most organizations consider AFTER the annual appeals, fundraising events, mailing campaigns, etc. The fact is, the untapped potential of planned giving is huge. Consider these statistics compiled by Michael Rosen, author of Donor-Centered Planned Gift Marketing:

  • 33 percent of Americans are willing to consider a charitable bequest
  • 69 percent of people over age of 30 expect to leave an inheritance
  • 22 percent of people over age of 30 have been asked to make a planned gift, and only another 10 percent are even familiar with the term “planned giving"
  • 5.3 percent of people over age 50 have made a charitable bequest commitment
  • 1 percent of Americans have created a Charitable Remainder Trust, but 5 times that number are willing to consider one

The other eye-opening fact about planned giving? Your best prospects aren’t always your biggest annual donors. Many planned gifts come from individuals who have been small but regular donors for five or more years. They give to your organization because your mission resonates with their values and concerns. And many of them would welcome the opportunity to make the kind of meaningful impact planned giving provides—if they only knew about it.
